Trust & Safety
Barter Network is built to reduce scams and protect the community. Here's what we do, what you should do, and exactly what happens if something goes wrong.
What Barter Network is designed to prevent
Traditional trading is risky because there's no record or enforcement. Barter Network uses Barter Bucks + in-app tools to create proof, accountability, and enforcement.
Verified sellers
Sellers can verify identity through Stripe Identity to earn trust and increase safety.
In-app records
Messages, booking details, and confirmations create a trace if a dispute happens.
Reviews & ratings
Bad actors get exposed quickly; great sellers rise to the top.
Moderation & enforcement
We investigate reports, restrict accounts, and remove scammers when evidence supports it.
Quick rule
If it's not in the app, it's not protected.
For the best protection: keep messages in-app, confirm terms in writing, and use verified sellers.
Emergency steps
Common scam red flags
If you see any of these, pause the trade and verify everything before continuing.
They push you to move the conversation off the app (text/IG/WhatsApp).
They ask for payment outside Barter Network or want you to 'send first'.
They refuse to verify identity or have a brand new profile with no reviews.
They won't share clear details (location, timing, item condition, service scope).
They pressure you with urgency: 'right now or it's gone.'
They offer deals that feel too good to be true.
Safety habits that keep you protected
These steps take seconds and prevent most problems.
Keep all communication inside Barter Network messages.
Use verified sellers (Stripe Identity verified) whenever possible.
Confirm the exact BB price, what's included, and the timeline before agreeing.
For in-person trades, meet in public places or safe exchange zones.
For services, confirm scope + address + start/end time in writing in chat.
Take photos/screenshots before and after for proof (items and services).
What to expect if you are scammed
We keep this clear on purpose. Here's the exact process from report → decision → outcome.
Step 1 — Report it (as soon as possible)
Use the Support page to report. Include:
- Who you traded with (profile name or listing)
- What was agreed (BB amount, item/service, deadline)
- What happened (no-show, fake item, incomplete service, etc.)
- Proof (screenshots, photos, receipts, chat timestamps)
Step 2 — We investigate
We review in-app records (messages, booking details, timestamps, history). We may contact both sides for clarification. In some cases we request extra proof.
Step 3 — Outcomes (what we can do)
- Account action: warning, restriction, suspension, or removal.
- Review visibility: allow you to leave an accurate review.
- Barter Bucks action (when applicable): adjust/refund BB based on evidence and platform rules.
- Safety note: we may add internal fraud markers to prevent repeat offenders.
Step 4 — What might NOT be protected
We can't guarantee outcomes when the trade happens outside the platform. Examples:
- Moving the conversation/payment off-app
- Verbal agreements not confirmed in messages
- Third-party payments outside Barter Bucks
- No proof of what was promised or delivered
That's why our #1 rule is: keep it in the app.
Ready to report something?
Don't wait. The sooner you report, the more we can verify.
Quick FAQ
Clear expectations = fewer scams.
How long does a review take?
Usually as fast as possible once we have enough evidence. Complex disputes may take longer.
Do verified sellers still scam?
Verification reduces risk but doesn't eliminate it. Always confirm terms in-app.
What proof helps most?
In-app messages, photos before/after, and clearly confirmed terms (BB price + delivery).
Can I prevent most scams?
Yes. Don't go off-app, use verified sellers, and keep everything documented.
